My Journey from Childhood Flower Dreams to Blooming Success

Updated: Feb 2

Embracing the Beauty of Flowers

From the sun-kissed petals of my mother's tropical paradise in my childhood home, where roses tangoed with jasmine and orchids whispered secrets to the breeze, my love affair with flowers began. Picture little me, knee-deep in that lush garden jungle, pretending to be a fairy queen ruling over a kingdom of blooms—ah, the innocence! Fast-forward to adulthood in chilly Albany, NY, where I spent a whopping 20 years battling the elements in a comedy of floral errors. My attempts at growing flowers? Let's just say they were more "wilted dreams" than "blooming success." I mean, who knew that upstate New York's frosty attitude wasn't exactly orchid-friendly?

The Vegetable Gardening Adventure

But wait, the plot thickens (or should I say, the soil composts?). Before flowers stole the show, I dove headfirst into vegetable gardening. Tomatoes, cucumbers—you name it—I had grand visions of farm-to-table feasts. Spoiler: It was a total flop. The culprit? A shocking lack of bees! Those buzzy little matchmakers were nowhere to be found, leaving my veggies lonely and unpollinated. In a hilarious pivot that only Mother Nature could script, I thought, "Fine, if veggies won't party without bees, let's invite the flowers to the bash!" And just like that, my gear shifted from salad dreams to petal power. Suddenly, my garden was buzzing—literally—with pollinators who couldn't resist the floral fiesta.

A Magical Twist in 2018

Enter the magical twist in 2018: During our family's July 4th celebration, fireworks exploding overhead, I casually opened Facebook to send some patriotic greetings to friends. Boom! There she was—my fairy flower farming mentor, Erin Benzakein of Floret Flowers, popping up like a digital genie. It was as if the universe said, "Carolina, your flower fails end here!" That very year, my garden exploded into an abundance of colors and scents, turning my once-barren patch into a blooming bonanza. Out of sheer gusto and gratitude (and maybe a touch of "what just happened?"), I snatched up Erin's book, Cut Flower Garden, and enrolled in the Floret Flower Farming workshop in 2019.

Transforming My Garden

Talk about a viral hookup—my social media scroll turned into a life-changing scroll! From plain old Bermuda grass (yawn) to an overfilled explosion of zinnias, dahlias, and sunflowers, my garden became the neighborhood's worst-kept secret. I'd show up at doors with armloads of fresh cuts, grinning like a floral Santa. "More flowers? But Carolina, we can't fit another vase!" my neighbors would plead, half-laughing, half-drowning in petals. It was hilarious overkill—until a wise friend pulled me aside and said, "Girl, why not share the love (and make some cash) at the Farmer's Market?" Genius? Absolutely. Viral potential? Imagine the TikToks of bewildered buyers hauling bouquets bigger than their kids!

The Business Side of Flower Farming

In 2019, I applied for my business name not because I was dreaming of empire-building (yet), but purely to unlock those sweet wholesale accounts from flower farming suppliers. Bam—gardening costs slashed by 75%! Who knew bureaucracy could be so blooming brilliant? It was like finding a cheat code in the game of green thumbs. Today, as @QuantumBlooms on X, I'm living proof that from childhood whims to adult wins (with a detour through bee-less blunders), anyone can cultivate their passion.
